Chillon Castle is located on a rock on the shore of Lake Geneva, just east of Montreux near Veytaux. This moated castle is the most visited historic building in Switzerland. For almost four hundred years, Chillon was the residence and profitable toll station of the Counts of Savoy.

This rocky island between Lake Geneva and the steeply rising mountains was inhabited a long time ago. From here, shipping traffic on Lake Geneva and the important overland road to the St. Bernard Pass were regulated for centuries. From the twelfth to the sixteenth century, Chillon was in the possession of the Count of Savoy, after which the Bernese conquered the moated castle and then the Vaudois.
